Project Description
This Piedmont cedar shingle staining project was completed by Arana Craftsman Painters on a two-story single-family home in Piedmont, CA. The three-week project paired cedar shingle staining with exterior painting across all four sides of the home.
The cedar shingles received Messmer’s U.V. Plus, an exterior wood stain suitable for cedar. Painted surfaces were finished with Benjamin Moore Regal Select Exterior MoorGlo Soft Gloss.
The project included the front door, eaves, fascia, windows, garage door frames, front fence, entry details, corbels, and grill wall. The exterior painting and shingle staining work was completed for $22,800.
Background/Story
Morris was especially concerned about the condition of the home’s roughly 100-year-old cedar shingles. He carefully reviewed contractors because he wanted the preparation and staining handled with care.
The project plan addressed the shingles as a separate wood surface rather than treating them like painted siding. Messmer’s U.V. Plus was used on the cedar, while MoorGlo was used for the painted exterior areas.

The finished exterior kept the cedar shingles as a stained wood feature while refreshing the painted architectural details around the home. The new coatings created a consistent finish across the doors, trim elements, windows, fence, and entry features.
