Project Description

This interior painting project took place inside a tea room designed for the 2023 San Francisco Decorator Showcase. The work focused on detailed finish painting and surface preparation so the room would be ready for its final design elements.

The scope included painting the ceiling in a high gloss finish along with crown molding, doors, door frames, and window frames. The walls were also primed in preparation for a custom hand-painted silk wallpaper that would be installed later as part of the design.

The entire interior painting project was completed in just four days. Timing was important since the space had to be ready for photography and the public opening of the showcase home.

Background Story:

The San Francisco Decorator Showcase brings together designers, builders, and skilled trades to create unique rooms inside one historic home each year. For the 2023 event, interior designer Dina Bandman Goldstone created a tea and mahjong room inspired by classic French design.

The space needed a painting team that could move quickly while still paying attention to small details. Arana Craftsman Painters stepped in on short notice to support the project and help bring the designer’s vision together before the showcase deadline.

During the process, a few last minute issues came up as they often do during showcase builds. One example involved moving a j box and touching up painted surfaces just hours before a photographer was scheduled to arrive. The team adjusted quickly and completed the updates so the room was ready on time. The finished space became one of the standout rooms in the showcase and was featured in several design publications covering the event.

Scope of Services:

  • Ceiling Painting: The ceiling was painted with a high gloss finish to reflect light and add depth to the tea room design.
  • Crown Molding and Trim Painting: Crown molding and decorative trim elements were painted to create clean lines throughout the room.
  • Door and Frame Painting: Interior doors and frames were painted to match the trim and maintain a consistent finish across the space.
  • Window and Frame Painting: Window frames were carefully painted to complement the surrounding molding and architectural details.
  • Wall Priming for Wallpaper Installation: Walls were prepared and primed to support the installation of hand-painted silk wallpaper that would complete the design.

Paint Products Used:

This interior painting project used professional-grade coatings chosen to support the final design of the space.

  • Color Inspiration: Farrow and Ball Pointing No. 2003
  • Materials: Benjamin Moore paint products
  • Trim Finish: Semi-Gloss
  • Ceiling Finish: High Gloss

Project Cost: Approximately $4,500 for the interior painting work.

Results:

After four days of detailed painting work, the tea room was ready for the final stage of the design installation. The high gloss ceiling created a striking focal point while the trim and molding gave the space a polished finish.

Once the wallpaper and design elements were added, the room became one of the highlights of the 2023 San Francisco Decorator Showcase. The finished project demonstrated how precise interior painting can support a designer’s vision and help bring a space together.

Working alongside designers and builders often means tight schedules and detailed finishes. Projects like this tea room show how thoughtful interior painting can elevate a space before the final design pieces are even installed.
